In Kopo, Bandung—one of the most densely populated areas—public spaces are scarce and neglected. Children play in unsafe lanes, and privatization threatens community life. Through tactical urbanism, this project aims to turn these lost spaces into active, safe, and inclusive areas that foster community bonds, support local businesses, and raise environmental awareness.

Introduction
Our project was sparked by concerns about how urban growth affects informal settlements, particularly in our pilot area of Kopo, Bandung. Inadequate public spaces in this densely populated area are left untapped, and they continue to be neglected and poorly maintained. It forces children to play in unsafe laneways, and the threat to privatize further adds to local residents’ challenges. Our goal is to use tactical urbanism to transform Kopo’s Lost Spaces into Active Spaces that foster community cohesion for a well-maintained area while promoting environmental awareness and empowering local businesses to thrive.
To ensure community cohesion, our project is guided through the design charrette process involving collaborative design activities with diverse groups such as children and adults.

Impact
This process values community engagement and encourages open discussions incorporating ideas from Kopo communities. Utilizing a tactical urbanism approach, we establish pop-up park activation equipped with flexible use, movable features and reusable materials to accommodate diverse users and activities and ensure easy maintenance, fostering active use of space based on adaptability, temporariness, and multifunctionality principles. The design also incorporates infiltration wells and vertical gardens to promote environmental awareness. Furthermore, this space can be utilized to empower local businesses through fun market days and bazaars. Additionally, with multifunctional principles, the space can potentially host digitalized events such as virtual markets, online workshops, and interactive exhibitions as part of digital placemaking initiatives and smart city development.
