We are focused on creating vibrant learning space for children in rural India by utilizing local resources and leveraging community power. With this aim, Bhato ki Dhani was visualized and now we need to expand - adding more classrooms, library  and a central shed where children can play, learn and gather during all seasons. This extension is to deepen the impact and foster growth as we aim to keep education a fun experience and inclusive to all.

Introduction
The JourneyProject began as part of a Fellowship, in a remote hamlet Bhato-ki-Dhani in Rajasthan—a region marked by extreme climate, limited educational infrastructure. The local govt. school catered to 150 students but had only 3 rooms for 8 grades, forcing teachers to combine classes and conduct lessons outdoors in harsh conditions. The school lacked play area, spaces for cognitive and physical development.
The social context was equally pressing—the families are laborers working in quarries, with little exposure to education. No resident is educated beyond Class 8. Education isn’t a priority, not because they don’t care, because SURVIVAL TAKES PRECEDENCE. Kids skip school to care for younger siblings and with no engaging environment, no one’s excited to attend.
The initiative was born out of the urgent need to create child friendly, and motivating school environment. This was a need raised by the teachers and community but funding from govt was meagre. As an architect, I saw how even small design interventions could create huge change. Understanding the context and climate we built a classroom, designed a play area using donated tires, and created an amphitheatre for learning and gathering. It wasn’t just about buildings—it was about CREATING JOY, CURIOSITY AND PRIDE IN A SPACE THAT NOW FEELS LIKE A SECOND HOME FOR THE CHILDREN.
The success of this community driven transformation has sparked the vision to expand school infrastructure & accomodate more needs.

Impact
Groundup StoryThis project goes beyond construction and infrastructure; it is EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES THROUGH DESIGN. Since the first phase, there have been noticeable changes: punctuality has improved, students are excited to attend the school and are proud to call it their own, teachers feel proud to be part of something that stands out from typical govt schools.
Quantitatively, the project directly benefits 150+ students and 6 teachers and indirectly affected 300+ family members of the students. We added a classroom, easing the burden of overcrowded teaching. The play area helps in aiding the cognitive development of the students. The mini amphitheatre which was constructed between the classrooms is being used as a flexible learning space for lunches and events. Besides the school, the community uses it as a gathering place.
Currently the students stand under the scorching heat for their prayers and for classes when rooms are not available. The upcoming phase is to include  classrooms, a library and a central shed to further improve learning conditions, reduce dropout rates, and create a versatile, protected space where students can play, learn, and pray year-round, unaffected by Jaisalmer’s extreme climate.
Qualitatively, the most powerful change has been the shift in ownership. Parents, teachers, and students helped paint tires and set up equipment. What started as a school project has become a source of pride for the whole village, a space they now see as their own.
Our aim is for a replicable model, provide high quality eduaction for all, irrespective of circumstances.

Core team
I met my team along my fellowship period. They played an integral part in realising the Phase 1 of the project.
Namrata Sah: Lead Architect. Responsible for the designing work of the shed and the classrooms.
Ansu Susan Oommen: Communication persons. Responsible for building the bridge between our teams vision and the stakeholders.
Pooja Khatri: Principal of Bhato-ki-Dhani. Plays an integral part in discussing the needs of the school and the Community.
Gopuram & Mukesh: Local contractors. The structural construction of the school can be only done by the locals as they are physical strong to work with stone.
Mr. Neeraj Dalal: Philantropist who helps to get funding from loacl doners.
Mr. Panjak Kewaliya: Local NGO contact person and support link. Responsible for the smooth running of the project and cater to any contacts.

Mr. Naresh Suthar: Education Govt. Officer. Vets the design as per the government rules and regulations.
Khump Singh: Village Sarpanch. He is the local elected body by the villagers without who’s support the development is not possible.

Where are we now
In Phase 1, a classroom was built, easing the burden on teachers who previously had to combine classes or taught under trees. An amphitheatre served as a flexible space for learning, events, or meals, and a playarea was introduced for cognitive development—especially meaningful in a rural setting. Most importantly, strong relationships were formed with the students, teachers, and the community. Activities like movie screenings, poster-making, and meetings helped build trust and curiosity, exposing children to new ideas beyond Jaisalmer. As an outsider, understanding the local context and earning this trust is vital for the success of Phase 2. A network of human resourses has been built.
An indication of our team’s capacity:

Finance: € 43,490
The funds will be allocated towards the construction of a central shed, aimed at providing a multifunctional, sheltered space where students can engage in educational activities, recreational play, and prayer throughout the year—unhindered by the extreme climatic conditions of Jaisalmer.

The proposed library is designed as an experimental space utilizing one of the most abundant local resources—desert sand—through a sustainable method construction technique known as sandbag architecture. Six classrooms would be constructed using the existing pattern designed in Phase 1. These structure will help reduce dropout rates making school an inclusive, interactive and interesting space to be in.

Skills: Financial advice, Technique
Financial Advisor: who is experience in international fundraising will play a crucial role in guiding the project toward securing the necessary support. Their expertise will help identify and navigate various funding avenues—such as grants, philanthropic networks, and CSR partnerships—while ensuring alignment with the humanitarian goals of the initiative.

Technical Advisor: will be essential in providing practical guidance throughout the building process given the experimental nature of the sandbag construction method. This role involves helping the team anticipate and address structural, climatic, and material-related considerations to ensure safety and longevity.
Stuff: Materials, Equipment & tools
Stone would be the main material for the construction of the project as it is the locally available material.
Computer for the development of the students.
Solar Panels and instillation for the eletricity as the region faces eletricity problem. Being in Rajasthan it is the prime soure of renuable energy.
Plastic bags rolls for the sanad along with barbe wires to hld the sand constrcution together.
box and round sections for the metal shed structure.
Hands
We would need the volunteers to be able to paint the interiors of the contructed project and willing to be a part of the library construction.
