Since the multidimensional crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the neighbors of the Agrupacion Familiar (AF) “10 de Julio” organized themselves in a common kitchen, called “Mujeres Trabajadoras”, to collectively cover the food needs of their families. Currently, they cook in precarious conditions for 60+ families, which is why they are managing the construction of an adequate place for the common kitchen and other community activities.

Introduction
The Agrupacion Familiar (AF) “10 de julio”is located on the top of a hillside, in the José Carlos Mariátegui Human Settlement. It was founded in 2011 and houses than 60+ families living under poverty and extreme poverty conditions. Despite the time that has elapsed since its founding, the neighborhood does not have access to any public services yet, like water, drainage and electricity. They also do not have consolidated access roads, so mobility implies a high risk.

Since the multidimensional crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the neighbors of the AF “10 de julio” organized themselves in a common kitchen, called “Mujeres Trabajadoras", to collectively cover the food needs of their families. Currently, they cook under precarious conditions for 60+ families, in a place that occupies "G Park", which before the pandemic was used as a gathering place and a playground. For this reason, they are managing the construction of an adequate place for the common kitchen and other community activities.

The recovery of "G Park'' as a recreational place is one of the reasons why the community sees the urgency of relocating the common kitchen. Likewise, the importance of continuing with the common kitchen is recognized as a collective strategy to reduce the costs of family food, especially with the current rise in food prices and the intensification of the food crisis.

In response, the neighbors are carrying out weekly tasks of leveling the land in order to build their community hub.

Impact
According to what was stated by the neighbors, the proposal of the community hub as a community space is fundamental for the development of "10 de julio". This facility is part of the neighborhood consolidation plan, a long-term process of  social self-production of habitat necessary to request to the local government the installation of public services.

This will directly benefit the 60+ families that are currently part of the AF and that cover their food needs thanks to the services of the common kitchen. The project will also allow residents to have an adequate collective space to hold meetings, make workshops, store tools and construction materials and for personal hygiene.
At the same time, the project also seeks that the 132 boys and girls of the community can receive school reinforcement and art/music classes, which will enhance their abilities and contribute to their development.

The initiative also involves the implementation of an urban orchard. This will contribute to the construction of a process of food sovereignty, to reduce the costs of food and the effort of the daily purchase. Families are expected to be able to learn about urban farming and replicate this initiative in their homes.

On the other hand, the  design of the project/process is being carried out through the use of participatory methodologies and popular education techniques. This with the aim of enhancing the self-management capacity and the organizational level of the community, while making effective the legitimate exercise of their right to habitat and self-determination.

Core team
The project is being managed between the Agrupacion Familiar 10 de julio, Habitable - Asociación para la Producción Social del Habitat and Instituto de Desarrollo Urbano - CENCA.

These teams are articulated as a result of a contest made by Cenca for the design of community public spaces in the AAHH José Carlos Maríategui, of which the AF is a part of. Cenca has been working and accompanying the AAHH urbanization process for more than 20 years.

The AF is represented by Sonia Taipe, leader of the "Mujeres Trabajadoras" Common Kitchen, which is part of the Network of Common kitchens of Lima; and by Cristian Paima, leader of the neighborhood council. Both assume the tasks of care and management of habitat improvements in the community. Hand in hand with Cenca, they are in the process of neighborhood consolidation, a prerequisite to request the installation of basic services before the local government.

Habitable is a transdisciplinary civil association that accompanies Social Production of Habitat processes through the use of participatory methodologies and Popular Education techniques. Currently, they are managing the implementation and construction of community hub and a staircase in the "Niños Guerreros de Jesús Project, in the AAHH Huáscar, also in San Juan de Lurigancho district. They are part of “Valora Nuestro Barrio”, a program of the College of Architects of Peru that seeks to articulate efforts between civil society and the private sector to support the consolidation of habitat projects in vulnerable communities.

Help bring our project to life!
26 June 2023
Another € 950 raised
Help bring our project to life!
Where are we now
The team has the necessary human and social capital to accompany the process of social production of the community hub.

To date, and through a series of participatory design workshops, we have already completed the co-design stage. In this way we have ensured that the project is designed by and for the AF. We are in the middle of the participatory planning process for the construction of the project, which is expected to start within the first months of 2023.
Also, the community is carrying out weekly tasks of land leveling with the objective of having the ground ready to begin the construction of the community hub as soon as the necessary resources are available.

An indication of our team’s capacity:
80% expertise already found
10% materials / equipment already found
35% builders already found
Finance: € 8,965
The financing is directly focused on allowing the community to see the design of the community hub, that they have collectively made, materialize. That is, for they see their dreams come true.
This financing will allow us to acquire the necessary materials and equipment for the construction of the hub. At the same time, it seeks to allow us to afford the costs of material transportation, which are quite high due to the slope of the hillside and the difficulties in accessing the AF

We are also looking for someone who can join the team and support us in spreading the project. This will allow us to generate greater visibility of the process of fighting for rights that the AF has been carrying out. Therefore,  more helping hands will contribute to make the community's habitat dreams come true.
Hands
In order to reduce labor costs, it would be of great help to have volunteer builders  that accompany us in the construction of the community hub.
