Architecture In Development (A.I.D.) is a non-profit organization initiated at the end of 2009. Our mission is to re-connect sustainable development to architecture by developing a user-generated knowledge platform.
The main feature of the web platform is the interactive architectural map where building information (related to a location's -contexts) can be added & edited easily by the users. Our homepage features articles carefully selected to encourage on-going discourses. Further, there is a bulletin-board for community members to share local and global visions on sustainable developments.
Architecture In Development is a collective project that invites the world to research collaboratively the cultural, social, economic and various contexts behind the architecture projects. Your contributed knowledge, expertise and creativity will be the foundations to develop location-specific solutions which is, we believe, what sustainable architecture development is about.
Why A.I.D. is initiated
The world of architecture is facing many new challenges. An enormous amount of building projects have been put on hold or are postponed for an uncertain period. Abundant buildings are left vacant at urban sites, while they could generate added values to the city if revitalized. Architects are now forced to re-evaluate their roles, or to find alternative ways to practice. On the other hand, different societies around the world are struggling with fundamental social-cultural and environmental issues; different demands for sustainable solutions are raised.
It seems like these are two parallel worlds which only meet occasionally. However, they are both part of the urgencies and challenges that confront us today, and bringing them closer could lead to entirely new visions and solutions. This is the foundation from which Architecture In Development (A.I.D.) originated - bringing both worlds closer together and connecting local initiatives, talents and locations in global sustainable developments.
It is essential to understand the local social, cultural, economic and environmental contexts in order to come up with sustainable architectural solutions. In other words, the site context from which a problem occurs and a project arises is as important as the end result. Therefore, A.I.D. invites people and organizations of the globe to contribute and share their expertise and experiences. Not only to document it, but also to exchange local knowledge, creativity and to bring about new perspectives.
A.I.D. is a an open accessible architecture platform - for critical colleagues, committed professionals, passionate amateurs and free thinkers who dare to look further and practice beyond the limits of their own profession and culture. It offers the opportunities for everyone to freely exchange knowledge and ideas, and collectively contribute to our living environment. Please do not hesitate to join A.I.D. and share your knowledge, talents and professional expertise with the world!
